microcement FAQs

Want to discover more about microcement? We have answered the most frequently asked questions below.

What is microcement?

Microcement is a refined composite coating comprising of cement, water-based resins, additives, and mineral pigments. It serves as adecorative finish that enhances any surface it is applied to.

How much does it cost?

Can you use microcement in a bathroom?
Yes. Microcement is suitable for bathrooms because it provides good protection against water penetration. An appropriate assessment of the existing surface will be required by the installer as well as adequate preparation of the base.
Can Microcement be used outside?
Microcement is ideal for external applications such as terraces, footpaths, swimming pool decks, porches and walls, unlike the majority of resins that cannot be applied in exterior environments. Microcement provides good protection from, water penetration and UV rays.
Can microcement be applied in top of tiles or wooden flooring?

After carefully assessing the base and with proper preparation, Microcement can be installed on any type of surface. We will advise you on the feasibility or otherwise of applying microcement over your existing flooring.

How do you keep microcement surfaces clean?

Cleaning a microcement floor is very simple. A damp cloth is sufficient to clean the surfaces, with the addition of a little neutral detergent for floors. It is recommended to periodically treat the floor with protective, superficial products based on self-polishing waxes dispersed in water, for example, beeswax. Detergents based on soap, acid, ammonia, chlorine or any abrasive detergent products are absolutely prohibited. It is recommended to use only NON AGGRESSIVE, neutral PH detergents.

Can I have underfloor heating with a microcement floor?

Microcement has perfect adhesion even on surfaces with underfloor heating systems. It is fundamental to choose a suitable support for the heating system installed. Microcement has a heat conductivity value of λ =0.46.

Is Microcement waterproof?
Microcement is not naturally impermeable, so it is essential to apply a sealer as a final coating to ensure its waterproof capabilities. To achieve impermeability, the surface should always be sealed using either Topsealer DSV (solvent-based polyurethane) or Topsealer WT (water-based polyurethane).
How long does it take to create a microcement floor?

Applying Microcement flooring takes between three to fice days, depending on the surface area. To walk over the surface, you normally have to wait a week.

How is microcement different to polished concrete?

Microcement and polished concrete are two popular flooring options used in both residential and commercial spaces. While both of these materials have a similar appearance, there are several key differences to keep in mind.

Microcement is a thin, cement-based coating that is applied to existing concrete or other surfaces such as tiles, wood, and plasterboard. It is a highly versatile material that can be used to create a range of decorative finishes, from rustic to modern. Microcement is typically applied in layers, with each layer being only a few millimeters thick. This means that it is lightweight and does not require the same level of preparation as polished concrete.

Polished concrete, on the other hand, is a concrete floor that has been treated with a series of grinding and polishing steps to achieve a smooth, glossy finish. This process involves removing the top layer of concrete to expose the aggregate beneath, before progressively smoothing and polishing the surface with increasingly fine-grit diamond abrasives. The result is a durable, low-maintenance surface that is ideal for high-traffic areas.

In conclusion, while both microcement and polished concrete can achieve a similar aesthetic, they differ in terms of their application and maintenance requirements. Microcement is a versatile, lightweight material that can be applied to a wide variety of surfaces, while polished concrete requires a more extensive preparation process but offers a highly durable, low-maintenance surface.
